THE SHIP INN, GATEHOUSE OF FLEET.
Dorothy L. Sayers
Dorothy L. Sayers famed novel Five Red Herrings was written while she stayed at this hotel, then known as the Anwoth Hotel. She referred to the then landlord, Joe Dignam, as "the kindliest of landlords" and had a true affinity with Gatehouse of Fleet, Kirkcudbright and the surrounding area in which the novel is based.
Her tale of Lord Peter Wimsey is a brilliant piece of original "who dunnit" and leads her readers through a colourful and teasing tale of murder and intrigue.
Guests can follow the trail by visiting many of the sites described - "over the Fleet Valley and the viaduct and frowned upon by the lofty scarp of the Clints of Dromore".
